Our film is in need of revisions but this is our current film project.

Scouting Locations

For our movie many locations were thought about to be used but the final decision was to use Carl's house to film. His house worked the best because he had the necessary backgrounds and other key places needed for our scenes. This included a pool, dark room, trees/woods etc. Some of the locations used are shown below.

Story Board- Final Draft

Our original storyboard was changed to accommodate with other changes made in our film. Within our film shots had been completely changed or modified to better fit our story thus we had to create a new story board to go with them. The final most important six shots have been chosen. The first shot is an establishing shot with glitches appearing on the screen. This is our opening shot and helps create the theme of our film that it is a simulation. The next shot we chose was a long shot of the protagonist Robbie riding down the street on his bicycle. This helps create the suspense of Robbie rushing to get home and show how nervous he is about his theories. This shot will be filmed with someone sitting on the back of a car with the camera to help create the actual effect of Robbie on his bike. The third shot is a mid shot of the friends. This is another scene that helps with the ongoing theme of Robbie being trapped in a simulation as it shows the friends with blank expressions and more glitches will appear on the screen. This will be an edited of scene of the friends glitching in and out of the scene. The fourth shot is a wide of of Robbie jumping into a pool. This is a pivotal scene in our movie because it sets the plot of the rest of the movie (that will not be filmed). This will be filmed using an underwater camera and lots of angles to help better create the scene. The fifth shot is a close up of Robbie's face. This scene shows Robbie after jumping into the pool. It will be filmed underwater and show his blank expression as he has seemingly drowned himself in order to escape the simulation. The last shot we have chosen is a full body shot of Robbie strapped in a chair. This is one of the last scenes of our film and helps more with the plot. All six of our final selected shots are very important to our film and have been chosen to film help make our film better.

Focus is one boy ROBBIE riding his bike. Pan Shot and Over-the- shoulder shot starts of ROBBIE approaching the driveway and walking his bicycle to the garage.  ROBBIE puts in code to the garage and is approached by JEFFERY and FRIENDS in a mid shot.)

JEFFERY

Hey is something up? You’ve been kinda quite all day.

ROBBIE

Yes I’m fine I just have a lot to get done today
(ROBBIE attempts to put code in garage again.)

JEFFERY
(cheerful & exaggerated) 

Hey man...

FRIENDS
 Where are you going?

ROBBIE
(while typing code into the garage)

I gotta go! Lots to do.

JEFFERY

Are you sure?

(Close-up on ROBBIE as the garage opens.  Friends get into car and ROBBIE sharply turns with a face of concern.  Cuts back to mid shot the faces of friends, shows them smiling and then their smiles turn to plain straight faces until glitches start appearing and they disappear one at a time.)

ROBBIE lets out a gasp of air in the Virtual Reality headset.)

For our film we chose the necessary actors to help us complete it. Shawn is an experienced actor who has performed in many other productions. He is ready to act in our film and will provide a great benefit because he is a very good actor. Though, Shawn has shown concern with jumping into the pool which is a critical scene in our movie, he has agreed to do it in order for our film to be complete. Jeffrey is also a well experienced actor. He is very excited to be in our film and will help us with anything that we will need. Katie has taken many acting classes and has performed in many other shows. She is very good at acting and understands what needs to be done for this film. I have also taken acting classes and am experienced with film production. Overall, our cast is very beneficial to our movie and I am excited to film with them.

The first shot is an establishing shot with glitches appearing on the screen. This is our opening shot and helps create the theme of our film that it is a simulation. The next shot we chose was an over-the-shoulder shot of the protagonist Robbie talking to his girlfriend, Jessica. This helps create the relationship of Robbie and Jessica, and show how nervous Robbie is about his theories. The third shot is a mid shot of the friends. This is another scene that helps with the ongoing theme of Robbie being trapped in a simulation as it shows the friends with blank expressions and more glitches will appear on the screen. This scene shows his emotion and face after just realizing he has been placed inside a simulation. The last shot we have chosen is a full body shot of Robbie strapped in a chair. Script- Rough Draft

Setting:

Present day at a school. Focus is one boy in class.

Starts in empty hallway where we see our protagonist gathering items from his locker when he is approached by a girl. Camera will be mounted on a tripod at the center of the hall way and back a bit. Full body shot.

Girl approaches guy

Girl:

“Hey is something up? You’ve been kinda quite all day.”

Guy:

(grins and lets out a small chuckle and begins to pat girl on the shoulder in assurance)

“Yes I’m fine I just have a lot to get done today”

(walks away, Camera stays in position as girl watches him walk away, after guy has exited the frame there is roughly a 4 second wait of the girl just standing still and staring and then suddenly a glitch effect)

Effect will be done by leaving camera in position and girl will move over and then cut later in post production.

Close up on guy as he walks away. His smirk changes to a face of concern.

Time cut

Bell rings. Guy is in a rush to leave school his friends try to stop him (group of probably 4-6).

Friends:

Hey man where are you going?

(they are very cheerful blah blah blah experessions of overexaggerated happiness)

Guy:

I gotta run! Lots to do.

(he says this while walking away quickly)

Friends:

Are you sure? C’mon C’mon

Guy:

Sorry guys!

(Long shot as guy urgently runs off)

(cuts back to mid shot the faces of friends, shows them smiling and then their smiles turn to plain straight faces for roughly 5 seconds until glitch effect starts happening and they disappear one at a time)

Cut back to guy on a bike or skateboard or something running toward camera as somebody sits on the back of the car recording

He rides into his house (my house) where he frantically is grabbing things (tape and bricks or something heavy) which he then tapes to his body he runs outside stands over the pool looks down at it

Guy:

I hope I’m right about this

He clenches his eyes shut and jumps in the pool. Cut to shot of him sinking in the pool to the bottom. Close up of face as the air empties his body and then cut to his face wearing a VR headset sweaty illuminated by light.

Cuts to a fullbody shot of him in a dark room strapped in a chair hooked up to stuff. He wrestles out of a wrist strap throws the headset off and then cuts to a shot of him exiting dark room.  

Research- The Matrix

For my final film to watch to help me plan for my own film project I chose to watch The Matrix. The Matrix is a scientific fiction film. While watching the first two minutes starts two of the movies producers (Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshaw Pictures). Incidental music played the entire opening helping add to the mysterious effect of the start of the film. A coding effect was used to transition into the film title. There is asynchronous sound of talking on the phone while on the screen more computer coding is shown. From the coding a graphic match is used to transition to a window. A pan of the room follows cops busting into a doorway and seeing a woman sitting alone in a chair. The budget of this film was 63 million USD while it made 463.5 million USD. This film has been nominated and won many awards. Some of these awards include, BAFTA, People's Choice Award, MTV movie award etc. While watching this film many amazing editing techniques were used that I enjoyed that I might even want to try in my own film.

Research- The Maze Runner

While planning for my film project I have been watching films similar to what my own genre will be. I am watching The Maze Runner. This film is another science fiction movie. The first two minutes opens with the production company, 20th Century Fox. A black screen is used with a sound bridge of elevator noises to a very dark elevator. A shot is used to go around the elevator very quickly. An aerial shot from the top of the elevator shows a boy (Thomas) in the elevator. Thomas is shown to be very scared and confused as to what is happening to him and doesn't appear t know where he is. The whole scene is a long take of the elevator showing a very paced event happening. Not much dialogue is used except for heavy breathing and panicked screams from Thomas. For mis-en-scene, there is very contrasted lighting switching from dark to light in the elevator shaft. No jobs were featured at the beginning of this film. The budget of this film was 34 million USD while it made 348.3 million USD. This film has been nominated for three MTV movie awards. While watching this film it greatly helped with the planning of my own film.

Research- Divergent

To help me plan for my project I am watching films of the same genre. I watched Divergent. Divergent is a scientific fiction, Utopian/dystopian genre movie. This movie opened the first two minutes with, the production companies that helped make the film possible. These companies included, Summit Entertainment, Lionsgate, and Red Wagon Entertainment. A view of a grassy landscape panned to a wall surrounding buildings. An aerial shot took us over these buildings quickly not focusing on anything in particular. The editing used was a long take and gave the audience a good view of where the movie would be taking place. Incidental music was playing the entire scene. Not much of the story was told within these two minutes.  No characters were introduced. While these shots were happening, many jobs were being introduced. Some of these jobs were, music supervisor, producers, costume designer, editors, visual effects manager, and the main actors in the film. The budget of this film was 85 million USD while it made $276,014,965. The film has been nominated for many awards including peoples choice, teen choice, and MTV movie awards. This film has helped with the planning of how to include the jobs at the beginning of my own film.

Research- The Hunger Games

To help me plan for my film project watching films of a similar genre is helpful. I watched The Hunger Games. This is a science fiction and dystopian society genre movie. While watching the first two minutes, it started with words describing the background of the hunger games and non-digetic music playing. It switched to a two-shot of characters talking on what seemed to be an interview talking about the games. An establishing shot was used next with text of "District 12". This showed trees and a forest landscape. A sound bridge was used with a scream into the next scene to introduce two new characters, Katniss and Primrose. An over the shoulder shot showed Katniss cradling her frightened sister. It was made clear that Primrose was awaken due to a nightmare. The films budget was 78 million US dollars. The profit made from the movie on opening week was over $286,384,032. No jobs were included at the beginning of the movie. The Hunger Games has been awarded with nominations ranging from MTV to People's Choice etc. It's most known being a golden globe for Best Original Song- Motion Picture. Watching this movie greatly helped with the planning of my own movie and gave me a better understanding of what to do.

Research- Black Mirror: Playtest (S2 EP3)

To better help my understanding of the film project I am watching films similar to my own genre. Black Mirror: Playtest is a short film from a Netflix original series. It is a simulation based episode which is similar to my chosen story line. The first two minutes of this film opened with the title of the film, Playtest written in a video game like font which shows a bit of what this film might have to do with. It then switches to a man packing items into a backpack. The mis-en-scene used lots of shadows in his house, especially over a family portrait while he is leaving. There was incidental music playing to create a somber eerie feeling throughout the whole time, and he is seen ignoring a call from his mother. Some editing included was a graphic match where the view from the car window matched with the exact view in the airplane window. There was little dialogue used and not a lot of the story has been told yet. No jobs were mentioned at the beginning of this film. The budget of this film series was around $2 million while they profited $40 million. This episode was nominated for a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) TV award for Best special, visual, and graphic effects. This episode helped me see a lot of different editing techniques I could use in my own film.

Project Selection-My Decision

The project I have chosen to do is the film project. I am very interested in making my own film and I believe I will enjoy and have more success with this project than the magazine project. The skills I have to complete this project are I have prior acting experience, and film and editing experience. These skills benefit me more in this project. Our film would be in the genre of science fiction because it incorporates the ideas of science and technology. This would be a fiction because of the unrealistic ideas that life is a simulation. I will be working in a group of three, Carl Fedora, Victor Garcia, and Katie Terres. Each of these members have the necessary skills that would benefit the creation of this project. Victor would contribute to the editing and filming of the movie. Carl would contribute to the filming by providing a camera and the necessary editing software for this film. Katie will provide the script and has previous acting skills that will help with this film. This project will take lots of time and effort but with the right skills and people, which I have, we will be able to get it done.

Project Selection-Film

The film project would be a very interesting project to do. Producing my own film greatly interested me about this project. The Newsroom, showed that with just bits of information gathered by the journalists, the producers were able to put together a great show. Being able to put together a movie from scratch would be a great experience. If I chose to do this specific project, a problem I might face might be disagreement among the group. If we could not all decide on a topic, it would be hard to make progress in the project. I would love to write a script, edit, and film my own movie. This project greatly interests me and I cannot wait to look more into it to discover more that I like about it.

Project Selection-Magazine

I am interested in doing the magazine project. The  aspect of print journalism that interested me are the gathering of information. When we watched, All the President's Men, I liked that they would get to go around interviewing all kinds of different people. The journalists in the movie were able to go to many different people and use what they said to make a great newspaper article. When we watched The Newsroom, I liked that they would all sit together going over ideas and working with each to make all their facts work together. The skills that I have that would make the magazine project a good fit for me would be my ability to  gather information and make a nice design layout for my magazine. I would enjoy designing a magazine  for people to view. Choosing a specific topic to write about would be a challenge for me when doing this specific project.
